Raffle fundraiser going to new accessible playground

A local school group is raising money to ensure all kids have a place to play.

Hillview Elementary Parent Advisory Council (PAC) is running a 50/50 Raffle to raise money for a new accessible playground at the school.

The PAC said Hillview “supports many students with diverse learning and accessibility needs, yet the school currently has no accessible playground equipment and no accessible pathways to existing play spaces.”

It also stated the provincial government distributes funds for accessible playgrounds through Playground Equipment Program grants, but those are prioritized based on the school’s size and need, and the PAC estimated it would be between five and seven years before Hillview would be eligible.

The plan was to deliver the new playground in stages, starting with an accessible pathway leading to an accessible play feature, such as a We-Go-Swing or We-Go-Round, depending on what School District 22 approved.

The second phase would see the playground built to be fully inclusive.

The 50/50 Raffle will run to June 17. As of time of publication the jackpot for the raffle was $3,455, with the winner to take half.

All proceeds from the raffle will go towards the new playground’s first phase, which was estimated to cost $180,000. Phase two with the purchase and installation of a fully accessible playground was estimated at $300,000 or $400,000. The PAC had previously raised $36,000 toward the project.
