The fire at a Vernon apartment building last week claimed the life of one person.

The fire sparked at a ground floor unit of the Parkview Garden Apartments around 6 a.m. Wednesday, March 25.

Vernon RCMP said firefighters responding to the blaze discovered what were believed to be human remains inside the building, and have since determined that one occupant was home but unable to escape the blaze.

“We want to extend our sincerest condolences to the friends and family of the deceased,” Const. Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, said.

The B.C. Coroner Service had been notified of the death and was undertaking their own concurrent fact finding investigation into the death.

The fire at the building in the 2300-block of 36th Street caused significant damage to the structure and resulted in at least four units being uninhabitable as of the latest update.

Due to the extent of the damage the exact cause of the fire was not identified, though investigators believed the fire was not criminal in nature.
