Police had to force their way into a house following a shooting incident in a Vernon park Friday evening.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP said they received a report of a potential shooting at Civic Memorial Park at around 5:45 p.m. March 20.

Two men who knew each other met at the park before a fight broke out. The suspect allegedly drew a firearm and shot at the victim. The man was uninjured and the suspect fled the scene and hid in a nearby residence.

Local police and the RCMP’s Southeast District Emergency Response Team responded and surrounded the residence, and the suspect then surrendered to police and was arrested without further incident.

“Even though this appears to be targeted, it’s completely and totally unacceptable,” Constable Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, said.

“A brazen act in a public place puts innocent people at serious risk and we’re incredibly thankful no one was injured.”

The suspect, a 31-year-old Vernon resident, remains in custody pending a court appearance as of time of publication.

The case remained under investigation Monday.
