Vernon’s housing construction slowed in February

Mar 18, 2026 | 3:56 PM

Housing construction slowed locally in February.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation said there were just six housing projects started in Vernon in the latest reporting month.

That was down from the 20 starts in January, and from the 36 starts in February of 2025.

To date a total of 26 housing projects had started in Vernon, down from 41 starts recorded in the same period the year before.

CMHC said there were 10 housing projects completed in February, though data on completions in Vernon were not available in 2025.

Though Vernon’s housing construction sector slowed, that was not the case elsewhere.

Kelowna recorded 341 new housing starts in February, which CMHC said was up compared annually. The Central Okanagan city also saw 406 housing projects completed during the latest reporting month, which was also up on a year-over-year basis.

B.C. as a whole saw 3,334 housing starts in February, up from 2,205 the year before.

Canada also saw 15,886 housing starts in February, up from 14,420 during the same month the year before.
