Cops on school buses keep eye on motorists

West Kelowna Mounties have been riding the school bus lately.

They’ve accompanied school bus drivers on their routes and have been monitoring busy pickup and drop-off locations to ensure other motorists are doing the right thing.

The aim is to identify and address drivers who do not stop when buses activate their flashing red lights and extend their stop signs while children are boarding or exiting.

In a media release, Corporal Tyrone Wilton of the West Kelowna RCMP Traffic Section, said they take the safety of our school children very seriously.

“This issue was brought forward by parents and the school district, and our units will be making a focused effort to address it. Ensuring that students can get to and from school safely is a shared priority within our community.”

Failing to stop for a school bus may result in enforcement action, including fines and applicable penalty points.
