Heli-skiing Incident

One person dead in avalanche near Revelstoke

Feb 20, 2026 | 5:30 PM

A heli-skier has died after being caught in an avalanche southeast of Revelstoke.

RCMP say the incident occurred on the afternoon of Thursday, Feb. 19, in a backcountry area.

The skier was reportedly located in a debris field under 1.5 metres of snow. CPR was initiated and the person was airlifted to Queen Victoria Hospital, but the medical interventions were unsuccessful and the skier was pronounced deceased.

Revelstoke RCMP said there was no evidence of criminality in the death, which remained under investigation by the Mounties and the B.C. Coroners Service.

“This incident is a tragic reminder of the inherent risks that exist in the backcountry, even for experienced users,” RCMP spokesperson, Corporal Brett Urano, said.

“We encourage everyone planning to travel in avalanche terrain to stay informed of current conditions, ensure they are properly equipped, and make conservative decisions to help keep themselves and others safe.”
