Veterans tribute crosswalk approved in West Kelowna

West Kelowna will soon feature a crosswalk dedicated to military veterans and active service members.

City council unanimously approved a Royal Canadian Legion request to install the tribute crosswalk at Dobbin and Elliott roads, near the local Legion branch.

The project is on hold for now though, as a new design must be created to meet provincial rules. The Legion’s original concept included decorative features layered over a ladder-style crosswalk — a format not allowed in B.C.. Current standards require specific parallel line markings and spacing alongside any decorative elements.

Staff said developing an updated template will take about six weeks. The city plans to cover the roughly $20,000 cost, with funding expected to come from future expenditure reserves, pending final budget talks.
