Nutrients For Eye Health: What an Optometrist Wants You to Know

Oct 22, 2025 | 8:19 AM

When it comes to protecting your vision, small daily choices can make a lasting difference. Being proactive about nutrition is one of the simplest ways to support long-term eye health.

While a healthy diet provides many of the nutrients needed for good vision, Western diets are often low in certain vitamins and minerals that are especially beneficial for the eyes. Dr. Mark Langer of IRIS Optometrists and Opticians explained that these nutrients can help maintain a healthy tear film, support retinal function, and sometimes slow the progression of diseases like macular degeneration.

“Two of the best-known ones for retinal health are lutein and zeaxanthin,” said Dr. Langer. “Omega-3s are shown to be beneficial, both for retinal health and tear film issues as well. But really, it’s lutein and zeaxanthin that we really promote for improving or stabilizing the retina and reducing progression of things like macular degeneration.”

Macular degeneration is a leading cause of blindness in the Western world. Patients who have macular degeneration in their family history or who are at risk of the degenerative eye condition may benefit from these specific vitamin supplements.

For people who suffer from dry eyes, the recommendation is often Omega-3 in the proper form and dosage to help to stabilize the tear film. Dr. Langer also mentioned vitamin K and vitamin E for other eye conditions. Depending on an individual’s ocular health, he says recommendations can be on a per-patient basis, but that in general, certain supplements are good for almost everyone.

While most eye-related supplements are available over the counter, Dr. Langer noted that not all products are created equal. The right form and dosage can make a big difference in how well the body absorbs these nutrients. Quality and formulation matter, and that’s where professional guidance helps.

“We have some really good vitamin products here at the clinic. And I’m happy to have those discussions with my patients on what we can do to preserve their ocular health and slow down the progression of various conditions.”

“I’m a big proponent of being proactive with your ocular health,” says Dr. Langer. He encourages patients to discuss their eye health and supplement options during routine eye exams, because when it comes to vision, prevention is the best medicine.
