Feedback to Guide Vernon's Growth

Vernon Mayor encourages public participation in the city’s long-term plans

The City of Vernon is hosting public engagement sessions for the Official Community Plan (OCP) and Transportation Plan (TP), and the Mayor encourages people to get involved.

The city opened an online portal Monday, May 26, for the public to provide feedback on the plans, which involves land use and transportation with the goal of creating a vibrant and accessible community that is prepared for the future.

Along with the online survey, and a physical one that people can pick up at City Hall until June 30, the city will host an open house from 2 to 6 p.m. June 5, and from 9 a.m to 12 p.m. June 7, at the Civic Memorial Park Community Classroom.

Mayor Victor Cumming encouraged people participate in the process, saying feedback could help guide the plans and help shape the future of people’s neighbourhoods and the city as a whole.

“If there’s things happening within their neighbourhoods that they think shouldn’t happen, [such as] changes in density, changes in height of buildings, things like that, it’s very, very important to [provide input],” Cumming told Vernon Matters.

“For city wide things, where they think the downtown core maybe should be slightly different than what’s being suggested in terms of development.”

He added people could also provide their thoughts on transportation improvements to address congestion and bottlenecks, though noted the plan will not include highway improvements because those are the responsibility of the province.
