No significant concerns for flooding in the North Okanagan

The freshet in the North Okanagan is not raising any significant concern for flood events.

In an email to Vernon Matters, the Regional District of North Okanagan said the four automated snow stations in the area were showing the snow water equivalent to be deceasing and below the historical average.

“Current conditions include cooler nights and warm days, leading to manageable snow melt and slower water release rates, resulting in average river flow rates and hopefully lower water levels in creeks,” the RDNO said in the email.

The RDNO added that, if snow melt rates do increase and river flows increase, sandbags and sand could be accessed through local authorities for people looking to protect their properties.

People were also encouraged to visit the PreparedBC website for more information on steps people can take to protect themselves and their properties from flooding events and other emergencies.
