The organizer of a society that helps feed people was named the 2024 Good Citizen of the Year.

The Vernon Chapter of Junior Chamber International (JCI Vernon) named Diane Fleming as the winner of the award.

Fleming is the Good Food Box’s program coordinator and has helped run the program for the past 25 years.

The Good Food Box is a cooperative that works with local partners to distribute locally grown food to over 1,000 families in need in Vernon and the North Okanagan.

“For all of her hard work, we would like to thank Diane on behalf of the citizens of Vernon. In addition to the award, JCI Vernon will walk alongside Diane in the Vernon Winter Carnival parade, with a vehicle being provided by Watkin Motors Ford,” JCI Vernon said in a release.

Additionally, Kidston Helm Ross Lawyers will make a $500 donation to Fleming’s charity of choice.

The Good Food Box coordinator was nominated for the Good Citizen of the Year award by Caroline Meijer, the coordinator of the Pregnancy Outreach program at the North Okanagan Friendship Centre.

“Diane has been involved with helping families and seniors with healthy eating most of her life,” Meijer said in the release.

“She taught community kitchens in Vernon for years, teaching participants to cook healthy meals on a low budget. Diane always goes over and beyond her duty making sure people have access to fresh, local good quality B.C. produce.”
