Local death rates declined on an annual basis

Greater Vernon and the North Okanagan saw death rate figures decline in 2024.

Vital Statistics reported a total of 734 deaths in the Vernon Centre/Coldstream local health area, which was down from the previous year’s total of 787 deaths.

The local figures for 2024 was also the lowest death total for the area since 2020, when there were 672 recorded locally.

The North Okanagan/Lumby health area saw 145 deaths recorded in 2024, while there were 99 in Armstrong/Spallumcheen, and 101 in Enderby, all of which were also down on an annual basis.

Meanwhile, Vital Statistics reported a total of 43,092 deaths across British Columbia in 2024.

The provincial death total was down from the previous year, which saw 45,003 British Columbians lose their lives. It was also the lowest total death since 2020, which Vital Statistics said saw 41,464 people lose their lives across the province during the year.

The provincial data collection agency did not provide information relating to the cause of deaths locally or provincially.

Vital Statistics provided the 2024 figures Monday, Jan. 20, noting the data was preliminary and subject to change.
