The local B.C. NDP MLA will have a new role in the legislature.

Harwinder Sandhu, MLA for Vernon-Lumby, has been named the Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture.

“It’s an honour to be appointed the Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture, and I’m ready to get to work listening to and supporting B.C. farmers,” Sandhu said in a written statement.

“I grew up in a farmer family and understand the hard work, time and dedication that goes into producing food, so am looking forward to working with B.C. producers to ensure we have sustainable local food systems. Minister [Lana] Popham and I have connected, and we had a great conversation. I share her positivity and belief that through collaboration with the entire agriculture sector, we can help farmers adapt to a changing climate; to address challenges they face, increase production, and grow their businesses so they can keep providing the healthy and delicious food that feeds our families and supports our communities as well as our economy.”

This is the local MLA’s second role with the party since first being elected in 2020.

Sandhu spent a portion of her first term as the local MLA serving as the Parliamentary Secretary for Seniors’ Services and Long-Term Care.

Sandhu was not immediately available for an interview with Vernon Matters.
