UPDATE: 10:30 a.m. Nov. 5

An apartment building on Pleasant Valley Road was evacuated due to smoke filling a unit Monday afternoon.

Vernon Fire Rescue was dispatched to the three-storey building for reports of smoke coming out of a top floor unit around 4:55 p.m. Nov. 4.

Residents had already evacuated the building as firefighters arrived.

Fire crew entered the building and confirmed smoke coming from a single unit, but no fire.

The unit and hallways were ventilated and residents were able to return to their homes after a short time.

“I want to emphasize the importance of heater and baseboard safety in our homes,” Deputy Chief, Alan Hofsink, said.

“Keep flammable materials, such as clothing, paper, and furniture at least three feet away from heaters and baseboards. Regularly inspect and clean heating units to remove dust and debris, which can pose fire hazards. And, it’s important when using portable heaters, do not overload outlets and always follow manufactures guidelines. By following these guidelines, residents can enhance their safety and comfort during colder months.”
