Vernon making changes around downtown washroom facilities, but not removing them

The City of Vernon will be undertaking a minor project to address negative feedback about the downtown washroom facilities.

The washrooms at the bus terminal and at 30th Avenue across from the FreshCo had received a lot of complaints from area businesses and residents, with the latter being the focus of issues, particularly around the unhoused camping at the corner.

The Downtown Vernon Association was asked to collect feedback from members and provide recommendations to Vernon City Council.

Council received the report and agreed that there were issues, though also noted the facilities are needed by not just homeless people but also members to the public and visitors.

Upon receiving the report, council voted in favour of removing the benches and trimming the shrubs to deter people congregating and loitering outside the public washroom. The facility would not be closed or changed.

These initiatives would be funded through the operations department’s existing budget.

Council also agreed to monitor the area and revisit the topic if issues persist.
