The lightning storm Saturday resulted in a fire igniting at a residential property in Vernon.

Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) crews were dispatched to a report of a tree on fire following a lightning strike around 5:45 p.m. Sept. 14.

Firefighters arrived on the scene in the South Vernon Drive area, and discovered that the lightning had ruptured a nearby gas line, which had caught flame.

The fire was contained to the ruptured gas line and a spruce tree directly above it.

VFRS, working in partnership with other agencies including FortisBC, were able to control and extinguish the fire. The tree was severely burned and it was recommended it be removed due to safety concerns.

“Thanks to the quick response and cooperation of various agencies, we were able to manage the situation safely and efficiently,” Deputy Fire Chief, Alan Hofsink, said.

“This event highlights the importance of FireSmart practices in maintaining the safety of your property.”

There were no injuries reported as a result of the fire.
