Why Back-To-School Eye Exams Shouldn’t Be Overlooked

Fall can be a busy time for families. Backpacks filled with fresh school supplies, a new routine for the household, and added extracurricular activities. It can be a lot to fit in, but a back-to-school assignment that shouldn’t get missed is a child’s eye exam.

“It’s all about setting kids up for the most success academically as possible” said Dr. Mark Langer from IRIS Optometrists and Opticians.

“A lot of the time, certain eye conditions can really hold kids back from reaching their full potential academically,” he stated. He explained that while problems with distance vision are easy to spot, 25% of the time kids have other undiagnosed issues that hinder their ability to focus up close.

That 25% means a comprehensive eye exam can be just as important as any other school preparation, helping to detect vision issues that could impact learning and overall well-being.

“Whether it’s their focusing system, a muscle imbalance, or strain on the visual system, issues like these can really hold kids back from excelling and cause a lot of unnecessary eye strain that unfortunately typically goes undetected by both parents and teachers.”

BC Health covers the cost

In British Columbia, MSP covers routine eye exams once every 12 months for children under the age of 19. Having this essential healthcare appointment covered means parents and caregivers can bring kids in for an exam without worrying about the cost.

Creating a fun, positive experience

Kids’ exams at IRIS tend to be more exciting than what you might expect from your own exams as an adult. Dr. Langer said he intentionally moves through a lot of steps fairly quickly to keep it fun and engaging for a child.

It’s also rare for a child’s exam to involve eye drops or anything that hurts. “It’s usually a really fun and painless experience for the kids. We love seeing them, and they tend to love coming to us.”
