OBWB encourages water conservation as Drought Level increased

The Okanagan Basin Water Board is urging people reduce their water use as the drought conditions have worsened.

The B.C. River Forecast Centre increased the Okanagan’s drought rating to Level 3 Thursday, July 25, meaning adverse impacts to socio-economic and ecosystem values are possible.

While under the Level 3 classification, the OBWB advises people curtail all unauthorized use of water and follow all local restrictions. It also recommended that water licence holders on streams and wells should also take steps to conserve water.

The OBWB added the recent heat wave led to stream flows across the Okanagan dropping, while water temperatures increased, which could have negative impacts on fish passage and spawning, as well as in feeding areas. The organization said by reducing water use, the ecosystems could be protected before flow levels drop below the environmental thresholds.

The water advocate group advises people refer to the Make Water Work materials that outline ways people can reduce their water use in the short- and long-term.
