Organizing society required to cover insurance for Vernon’s Canada Day celebration
The group organizing Vernon’s Canada Day celebration at Polson Park will need to put up some extra funds.
At the May 13 regular meeting, Mayla Janzen of the Vernon Okanagan Inspired Community Events (VOICE) Society, formerly the North Okanagan Canada Day Society, requested support and approval for the Canada Day activities that include a skateboard competition; car show; Fruitfest; story walk; an animatronic dinosaur; dunk tank; Polson Artisan Night Market and Food Truck Garden; performances by local and regional-based bands and musicians; and a giant suncatcher and igloo constructed of inner-tubes.
At the time, Janzen stated the celebration would not include a fireworks show due to the ongoing drought conditions and fire risks.
The VOICE Society also requested the city provide tables, chairs and an event trailer for the festivities, waive the park rental fees, provide parks keys and employees, set up six porta-potties at the park, conduct on-site traffic control, and provide temporary permits for the entertainment and the skate competition.
