Property Tax Exemptions

Permissive tax exemption applications open for Vernon properties

Jun 3, 2024 | 4:00 PM

People can now apply for tax exemptions for select properties within Vernon’s city limits.

The city open the application process for the 2025 Permissive Tax Exemptions Monday, June 3.

The program provides a reduction in property taxes for certain uses, including places of worship, private schools, and non-profit operations.

Vernon city council recently updated the permissive tax exemption policy to allow places of worship, private schools, and hospital-related properties to apply for exemptions that last up to five years, pending submission of an annual confirmation that no property information has changed.

The updated policy noted that other non-profits will still need to apply for exemptions each year, though an initial comprehensive application package will only need to be filled out once at the start of a five-year cycle, and after that’s been approved, then only a short, annual renewal will be required.

Properties that received a permissive tax exemption last year will need to re-apply and start the five-year cycle this year.

Permissive Tax Exemption applications can be submitted between June 1 and July 15, with more details on eligibility criteria available at the city’s website.
