Verley passed away peacefully at the North Okanagan Hospice House surrounded by her daughters on March 22, 2024 at the age of 76, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born to Allan and Pearl Smith in Saskatchewan. Verley grew up on a farm with her brother Allan and her cousins Gary, Patty and Kevin. After honing necessary evil rooster evading skills, the families moved to Richmond, BC. She joined The Royal Canadian Service Corp where she earned the rank of Corporal and met the love of her life, Butch Calvert. After a short side trip to Alaska where she was politely asked to leave the country, please read kicked out (it was a working VISA technicality but still, kicked out of the country). She and Butch married, then moved to the Okanagan where they started their family. Together, they were involved in stock car racing, snowmobiling, Demolition-Derby, camping, traveling and later in life go-karting. After butch passed, Verley continued to enjoy camping, traveling, kayaking, her beloved pets and spending time with family and friends. She loved people. Meeting new people, going on adventures and catching up with old friends were some of her favorite things to do.
While Verley tried many jobs throughout her life, she settle into upholstery when she opened
‘Kitti Kat Upholstery’ over 40 years ago.
It is still unclear whether the evil rooster evading skills of her youth were helpful in life.
