District gets grant for active transportation project

The District of Coldstream has been awarded a provincial grant to be used for a future active transportation project.

The district will receive $50,000 from Victoria to update its active transportation network (bike and pedestrian plan) which the municipality will have to match.

What the funds will be used for is still to be determined.

“Urban Systems will complete this project on behalf of the district with several key deliverables identified, including design options for the Buchanan Road Bike Path and the Kidston Road on-street path,” Janis Netzel, director of infrastructure services, said in a report to council.

The funding comes from the BC Active Transportation Grants Program.

The grant application was submitted in October 2023 and contained the following deliverables:

• Identify gaps in the current active transportation network with respect to access to major destinations within the municipality and commutability by active modes.

• Develop Class ‘D’ cost estimates for high-priority routes – as determined through engagement with council and the community.

• Undertake public engagement with the goal to determine implementable solutions to enhance active transportation modes, such as walking, cycling, skating, kayaking, paddle boarding, as well as active winter modes.

• Consider the implementation of protected and separated active transportation facilities, pedestrian and cycling safety improvements, end-of-trip facilities, lighting considerations, way-finding, and other solutions such as electric mobility (e.g. e-bikes).

• Preliminary design of a high priority project identified in the plan and chosen by council.
