A local volunteer leader will be recognized for his community work.

Norm Crerar has been named the recipient of Canada’s Volunteer Awards in the community leader category for British Columbia.

Crerar, who moved to Vernon in 1981, was instrumental in developing Silver Star Mountain into the resort that draws people from around the world for year-round outdoor activities.

His first community work was developing the Silver Star Mountain Volunteer Fire Department, of which he was a member from 1984 to 2015.

Currently, Crerar serves on the boards of the National Altitude Training Centre and the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre Society. He is also active with the British Columbia Dragoons Regimental Society Awards.

He is also the president of the Okanagan Military Tattoo, a military showcase held at Kal Tire Place featuring military bands, dancers, musicians, and marching troops.

“I am overwhelmed with happiness and pride, not only for this recognition but for the unwavering support of my family, friends, and all partners who have stood by me in this journey,” Crerar said.

Crerar was one of 20 Canada’s Volunteer Awards recipients from across the nation.

“The recipients of the Canada’s Volunteer Awards are inspiring all of us through their stories and achievements, and I am glad to be able to honour them and celebrate their accomplishments,” Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Jenna Sudds stated.

“On behalf of all Canadians, I want to thank all the volunteers across Canada, including all those who were nominated, for continuing to make a difference in their communities. You represent the best part of Canada, and because of your selfless work, our communities are better and stronger.”

The award winners will be honoured with a hybrid ceremony in Ottawa on April 15, which coincides with the 10th anniversary of Canada’s Volunteers Awards.

The award recipients will also be able to identify not-for-profit organizations that will be provided grant funding from the Canadian government.
