Significant Snowfall

Heavy snow expected on highways

Feb 22, 2024 | 5:00 PM

Environment Canada is forecasting snow on B.C.’s mountain passes this weekend.

The weather agency said “significant snowfall” could be expected on the Coquihalla, Highway 3 and the Trans-Canada from Eagle Pass to Rogers Pass.

Snow is expected to start to fall Saturday, intensify through Sunday, then taper off Monday, (Feb. 24-26).

“A large low pressure system will bring significant snowfall to B.C. mountains beginning on Saturday,” Environment Canada said in a special weather statement.

“As the low intensifies on Sunday, snowfall accumulation will rapidly increase across the highway passes. Snow levels will also lower to near valley bottom in the wake of the cold front associated with this low. Local blowing snow is possible in wind-prone areas.”

Motorists are warned that the snow could reduce visibility and create challenging driving conditions, and people are urged to adjust their driving to match the weather and road conditions.

Environment Canada also asks that travellers check the weather forecasts and road conditions at DriveBC before getting behind the wheel.
