High Particulate Matter Levels

Dust advisory issued in Vernon

Feb 14, 2024 | 9:39 AM

A dust advisory has been triggered in Vernon due to high concentrations of particulate matter in the air.

Environment Canada, in collaboration with Interior Health, issued the special air quality statement at 8:16 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14.

The weather agency stated the advisory would stay in place until conditions change as a result of precipitation, dust suppression efforts or changes in traffic pattens.

The particulate material levels tend to be higher around busy roads and industrial operations.

The dust can be a particular concern for people with chronic conditions such as asthma, COPD, heart disease and diabetes. People with infections such as COVID-19 or RSV, pregnant women, infants and older adults are also more susceptible to the dust.

“Persons with chronic underlying medical conditions or acute infections should postpone or reduce strenuous exercise until the advisory is lifted,” Environment Canada stated.

“Where appropriate, maintain physical distancing. Anyone experiencing symptoms such as continuing eye or throat irritation, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, cough or wheezing, should follow the advice of their health care provider. Staying indoors helps to reduce particulate matter exposure.”

People taking medication or who have heart conditions are advised to pay close attention to their symptoms.

The weather agency added individuals can help reduce the outdoor air pollution levels by leaving their car at home and using alternative transportation methods such as carpooling, busing, walking or cycling.
