A new facility in Vernon’s newest park is a tribute to a big part of the city’s history.

City staff say a shade structure at Civic Memorial Park on 37th Avenue is “substantially complete.”

“The structure pays homage to the Civic Arena and features decorative wooden beams, some of which are original to the arena, and has ice hockey inspired blue lines and a red line cast into the concrete underneath,” an administration report to city council stated.

The Civic Arena, which opened in 1937, hosted number of sporting and other events before it was demolished in 2018, as it was felt to be beyond repair.

City staff say renovations to the park’s new building have also reached substantial completion and the new public washroom will open this spring.
