Flights diverted from YLW

Fog playing havoc with holiday flyers

Jan 30, 2024 | 12:15 PM

“Life is a journey, enjoy the trip” is a famous quote, but it might not be applicable to some weary travellers trying to return home from southern holiday destinations.

Sunseekers have several seasonal direct flight options to Mexican resorts including Cabo San Lucas, Cancun, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. Those flights have been driving traffic volumes at Kelowna International Airport, with daily January averages of 2,750 passengers.

However, the warm winter weather in the Okanagan is creating some problems with heavy fog descending on the valley, which has delayed and diverted several flights.

“A trapped valley fog is a common sight for many locals here in the Okanagan Valley, where there is a band of cloud that sits about halfway up from the lake and the top of the mountains. It occurs when cold air piles in throughout the late fall and winter season and it becomes trapped,” The Weather Network stated.

Over 160 passengers and crew returning on a WestJet flight from Puerto Vallarta on January 29 were delayed leaving PVR for over 90 minutes due to a combination of weather and then mechanical issues. As the flight finally approached Kelowna, the Boeing 737-800 was diverted to Vancouver.

Arriving at YVR after midnight, the airline put up passengers in Richmond hotels, provided meal vouchers and then continued the flight Tuesday morning at 7 a.m. into Kelowna.

While this was one incident, social media has provided stories of trips home of 24 hours.

Kelowna International Airport advises travellers to be well informed, check arrival and departures before going to the airport and to know their passenger rights.
