Search underway for North Okanagan’s next top cop

The hiring process is underway for Vernon North Okanagan’s next commanding officer.

Last November, Superintendent Shauna Baher announced she would be leaving her role for a new job as Chief Superintendent of the RCMP’s Vancouver Island District.

Speaking with Vernon Matters following the regular council meeting Monday, Jan. 8, Mayor Victor Cumming said the RCMP was in the process of searching for Baher’s replacement.

“Our hope is that the officer in charge is selected prior to Superintendent Baher moving to her new post,” Cumming said.

“She’s supposed to move to her new post sometime in February.”

Cumming said he and Patti Bridal, Vernon’s chief administrative officer, were involved in the search process, though the local RCMP will ultimately have the final say on the detachment’s new top cop.

The mayor would not comment on how many candidates had been considered, but did say “We just want to have a really good [Officer in Charge]. That’s what we’re used to, so we’re hoping for the same again.”
