Home is where the wins are: Vipers rack up two W’s at Kal Tire Place

The Vernon Vipers used home ice to their advantage with two wins this weekend at Kal Tire Place.

Captain Connor Elliott’s goal midway through the second period lifted the Vipers to a 3-2 win over the Trail Smoke Eaters Saturday night before 2,525 fans.

Nick Mikan and Payton Struck also scored for Vernon who improved to 19-11-1-0. Their 39 points puts them in fourth place in Interior Conference.

Ethan David allowed a Trail goal just 34 seconds into the contest, but overall, made 19 saves for his 13th win of the season in net.

“It was a tight checking game tonight, but I felt we played disciplined within our structure,” Vipers assistant coach Lukas Lomicky told vernonvipers.com. “It was a solid 60 minutes and finishes off a good weekend with a win.”

On Friday night, Colin Reay stopped all 25 shots that came his way as the Vipers shutout the Cranbrook Bucks 4-0 before a crowd of 2,222 at Kal Tire Place.

The Snakes took advantage of a bunch of Bucks penalties, going 2 for 7 on the power play.

The newest Viper, Etienne Lessard, who joined the team from the Cornwall Colts, scored a goal in his Vernon debut with Owen Kim, Erik Pastro and Nick Mikan also rippling the mesh.

The Vipers next play the BC Hockey League-leading Penticton Vees Friday at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

In the KIJHL, Cash Anderson scored the winner as the North Okanagan Knights edged the Summerland Steam 2-1 in a chippy affair Saturday at the Summerland Arena.

The Knights (10-16-2-3) host the Nelson Leafs at 12:45 p.m. Sunday at Nor-Val Centre.
