Hundreds of students participate in anti-racism conversations
A local initiative to promote inclusivity and combat racism through sharing stories had a large turnout.
The Vernon and District Immigrant and Community Services Society (VDICSS) said over 200 local students took part in its Voices of Vernon World Café event at the Vernon branch of the Okanagan Regional Library on Nov. 29 and 30.
The program served as a platform people to tell their stories to the students so they could gain perspective on the diversity and history of people living within their communities. Students were then able to go have open discussions on racism, discrimination and prejudice based on both what they had heard from the speakers and from their own personal experiences.
VDICSS said the Voices of Vernon World Café provided an opportunity to promote intercultural understanding through storytelling and creative expression, which aligns with the provincial K-12 Anti-Racism Action plan.
