The local student-to-class ratio mostly declined on an annual basis in the the 2023-24 school year.

A report to School District 22’s Board of Trustees showed declines in kindergarten, Grades 4 to 7, and Grades 8 to 12 classes on a yearly basis.

The report by Malcolm Reid, SD22’s director of human resources, said the average kindergarten class size this year is 17.4 students, down from 17.8 the previous year and from 18.3 in 2021-22.

Grades 4 to 7 had an average class size of 23 students, down from 23.7 the previous two years.

Grades 8 to 12 had an average of 20.8 kids per class, down from 21.8 in both 2022-23 and 2021-22.

The report noted the average class size for Grades 1-3 rose to 20 this year, up from 19.8 the past year and 19.9 the year before.

All together, the average class sizes in SD22 equated to 20.3 students in 2023-24, down from the previous year’s average of 20.8, and from the 20.9 students per class in 2021-22.

Reid’s report also noted a few vacancies that were “proving challenging to fill.”

The report said it was still short one district educational psychologist, though two interns had been hired to assist in providing those services, and also had an unfilled deaf and hard of hearing teacher position.

SD22 also had undisclosed amounts of Indigenous support worker, noon hour supervisor, and casual bus driver job openings.
