Coldstream Community Hall opens as cooling centre

Jul 20, 2023 | 2:35 PM

The District of Coldstream has opened up one of its newest facilities to help people cool off.

With temperatures expected to reach the mid to upper 30s today and tomorrow (July 20, 21) Coldstream’s Community Hall, which opened in May, is being operated as a cooling centre for people to access and beat the heat.

The Community Hall at 9909 Kalamalka Road will be open from 2 to 7 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.

The district stated pets are welcome in the cooling centre but must remain in carriers or on leashes and under the control of owners at all times.

Additionally, the district noted the Kalamalka Beach, Sovereign Park and Creekside Park are all open and offer lake access and/or shade.

People are also reminded that heat-illness can affect anyone, but children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with chronic or pre-existing conditions are most at risk. People are also advised to check on friends, families and neighbours during times of high heat.

The heat warning is expected to be lifted over the weekend, as daytime temperatures are expected to drop back to the low-30s.
