Lead foot drivers continues to see their vehicles towed away as police put a priority on catching excessive speeders.

Kelowna RCMP say they have handed out 35 of those violations this year which carry a fine ranging from $368 to $483 along with three driver penalty points.

The vehicles involved are also usually towed away and impounded for at least seven days.

On Wednesday, July 19, just before 6 a.m., a Kelowna RCMP officer spotted a driver on a red 1985 Yamaha motorcycle who turned left from Gordon Drive and accelerated westbound on Clement Avenue at a high rate of speed.

“The officer confirmed via radar the motorcycle was traveling at 103 km/hr in the posted 50 km/hr zone. The officer conducted a traffic stop, pulling the driver over in the RCMP detachment parking lot on Clement Avenue,” Const. Mike Della-Paolera said.

The 33-year-old male driver was issued a ticket for excessive speed and his motorcycle was impounded.

A short time later on Highway 97 near Ellison Lake, a 2004 Mazda 3 driven by a 24-year-old man with a class seven license (graduated licensing) was ticketed for excessive speed and had his vehicle impounded after being clocked at 135 km/hr in the posted 90 km/hr zone.

Later on in the same location, a vehicle driven by a 20-year-old man was issued a ticket for both excessive speed and no insurance ($598).

“Drivers continue to put themselves and others at risk by driving at these speeds on our streets,” Della-Paolera said. “Our traffic and other frontline officers are committed to removing these vehicles and their drivers from our roadways and issuing the appropriate fines. These high speeds and complete disregard for public safety is not acceptable.”
