It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Joseph Sullivan, beloved brother, uncle, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Joe was born on April 4, 1931, in Brent’s Cove NL, and died in Vernon BC on May 31, 2023, at the age of 92.

Joe was predeceased by his parents, John and Elizabeth, his siblings Anne Dwyer (John), Elizabeth Kavanagh (Bill), Gregory Sullivan (Claire), and Ellen Sullivan. He also mourned the incredible loss of his grandson, Paul Christopher Sullivan, whom he loved beyond measure.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 62 years, Vivian, who stood by his side through thick and thin, sharing a lifetime of love and devotion. Joe was a dedicated father to his son Greg (Gillian), and his daughters Jo-Ann and Kelli (Todd Strilchuk), who brought him immense pride and joy. He was a loving and doting grandfather to Sherry Sullivan, Kaela Baldwin (Corey), Cole Strilchuk, and Connor Strilchuk. Joe was also blessed to have a great-grandson, Carter Baldwin, who brought a new generation of happiness into his life. He is also survived by his siblings Molly (Bernard) Walsh, Sr. Ellen Marie (Sisters of Mercy), Edward (Margie) Sullivan, Jerry (Gail) Sullivan, Stella (Jim) Wallace and Genny (Bruce) Forbes as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Joe’s professional journey took him on an adventurous path. His early working years in Newfoundland started when he was a teenager working in his grandfather’s store and salmon canning factory. In 1948, he walked many miles to Bowater’s logging camps in Baie Verte where he worked for several years. In the early 1950’s, he found employment at the Goose Bay Airport followed by a stint with NORAD on Resolution Island (Dew Line N30). In the mid-50’s Joe started his long career in the mining industry, allowing him to explore and experience various corners of the globe; From Tilt Cove and Baie Verte NL to Tasu Haida Gwaii BC, Sierra Leone West Africa, Red Lake ON, and Detour Lake ON. Joe’s determination and dedication left an indelible mark on the mining communities he served. After retiring, Joe settled in Kelowna BC for 25 years which became his second home. During this time, Joe indulged in his love of the great outdoors. His pastimes included hunting, skiing, fishing, hiking, gardening and wood-cutting. Joe’s grape-growing and wine-making skills were renowned among friends and family, and his homemade concoctions were a testament to his passion and craftsmanship.

Joe was a life-long volunteer. His community service in Baie Verte, where he raised his family, included the Fire Brigade and Town Council. In Kelowna, he served 23 years with St. Theresa’s Catholic Church as an alter server and the Knights of Columbus. He was the Saturday night “bartender” at Cottonwoods Care Centre and assisted at the Blood Donor Clinic.

As we bid farewell, let us remember a man who lived well, laughed often, and loved much. He was a proud Newfoundlander whose kindness, generosity, humour, and adventurous spirit will live on. May his soul find eternal peace, and may we find solace in his legacy.

A funeral service will be held at the St. John The Apostle Parish on September 4^th, 2023, 2:00 PM in Brent’s Cove NL. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Brent’s Cove Catholic Church Cemetery Fund or to a charity of your choice in Joe’s name, as he was an ardent believer in giving back to those in need.
