Music society kickstarts new digital concert series

Jul 1, 2023 | 6:00 PM

Small bars and open mic nights, concerts in the park and farmers’ markets—these are the training grounds where musicians are born.

Now, a local music society is giving the province’s hidden talent a new digital stage. With recording slated for the fall, the Salmon Arm Folk Music Society (SAFMS) plans to beam the Digital Currents concert series onto screens and into homes across the province beginning in December. But, before the show can begin, the SAFMS is hunting for six emerging and independent B.C. musicians.

“Our mission at the SAFMS is to enrich the cultural fabric of our community, both in Salmon Arm and across the province,” Kevin Tobin, artistic director, said. “We’re thrilled to give these musicians a platform to share their music and meet new fans through Digital Currents.”

Applications for Digital Currents are now open to signed and unsigned musicians of all ages from all genres and all corners of British Columbia. All applications will be reviewed by a jury panel before Tobin selects the final six to perform a recorded and live showcase in Salmon Arm. Selected artists will be paid and have a portion of their expenses covered.

“This series has been in the works for some time,” Tobin explained. “We can’t wait to offer this unique chance for emerging artists from B.C. to connect with fans throughout the province and the world.”

Digital Currents follows the Society’s 31st annual ROOTSandBLUES festival featuring Sarah McLachlan, Blue Rodeo, Five Alarm Funk and more at the Salmon Arm Fairgrounds Aug. 17-20.
