UPDATE: Home likely ‘total loss’ after fire, space heater thought to be cause

UPDATE: Nov. 19:

A space heater is believed to be the cause of a fire that caused major damage to a modular home in Coldstream.

Keith Green, protective services manager with the District of Coldstream, said the home in the Lakeway Mobile Home Park off Kalamalka Road was a total loss after the blaze on Friday morning.

“I suspect it will be a total loss,” Green told Vernon Matters. “It sustained heavy damage in both water and smoke.”

Green credited Coldstream and Lavington’s firefighters for keeping the fire from spreading to the neighbours house, and from other homes in the park.

One adjacent home sustained minor damage to its siding.

Green said the fire likely started when the homeowner was using a space heater to make repairs to a hot tub.

“He was just trying to keep the pipes and motor warm. He turned around and looked back and apparently there was flames. He tried to mitigate it himself but was eventually overcome with smoke,” Green said.

The resident escaped with his two dogs without injury. Another resident was at work at the time.

Green will be talking with the homeowner today (Nov. 19) to get more details.

He said the incident serves as a good reminder for people to be cautious and vigilant when using space heaters.

A witness told Vernon Matters the homeowner and his two dogs got out safely and the other occupant was at work at the time.

The Coldstream Fire Department, with help from Lavington, managed to keep the blaze to the one unit although there was minor damage to the siding of a home next door.

Crews are now mopping up, and the cause is considered accidental

The witness said the couple had just recently moved into the home and had completed thousands of dollars in renovations to it.
