“Oktoblerfest” celebrates German food and culture

Oct 15, 2022 | 5:00 PM

It is fitting that Okanagan Spring brewmaster Stefan Tobler will oversee the second annual Oktoblerfest at Wings Restaurant in Vernon today and Sunday.

Tobler’s signature beer is 1516 and this year’s event falls on October 15 and 16.

It is a take on Oktoberfest, the world’s largest Volksfest, featuring a beer festival and carnival which is held annually in Munich, Germany. The event starts in mid-September and draws more than six million national and international visitors to the beer halls.

The festival celebrates German heritage, food, dance, culture, and gemütlichkeit (friendliness) in Vernon, the home of Okanagan Spring Brewery and the Tobler family who founded the craft brewery in 1985. Three brothers still work for the brewery.

(L-R) Stefan, Andy and Marcus Tobler kick off the second annual event / Photo submitted.

The Saturday menu will feature Bavarian roasted chicken, golden brown and crispy. The Sunday menu will include Bavarian würstl (sausages).

Also featured will be brezen (pretzels), reiberdatschi (potato pancakes), sauerkraut and live entertainment by Marv Machura.

The event kicks off both days at 2 p.m. until late.

Tickets are still available at Wings or at Eventbrite.
