New Rail Trail facility waiting for power

Oct 14, 2022 | 5:00 AM

Supply chain issues continue to delay the opening of a new facility for Okanagan Rail Trail users in Coldstream.

Coldstream Station on Kalamalka Road, just north of Dutch’s Campground, will provide parking, washrooms and other amenities for people using the popular, nearby trail.

A new Sun Country Cycle store is under construction at the south end of the site, with that business expected to open next year.

Trevor Seibel, chief administrative officer for the District of Coldstream, said they have experienced significant supply chain delays on the project, specific to equipment needed for power.

“Although the bulk of the facility is almost done, with no power it renders the washrooms useless,” Seibel told Vernon Matters. “The decision was made to open the facility once, when it’s ready to go, as opposed to open it, and then close it when the equipment arrives.”

Seibel said they hope to have “everything on route” within the next couple of weeks.

The building contract for Coldstream Station, valued at $1.6 million, was handled by TKI Construction of Kelowna. The project was funded by a provincial grant of $624,257 with the rest from the Community Works (Gas Tax) Fund.
