‘Last Breath’ survivor to speak in Vernon

The subject of a documentary featured on Netflix will be coming to Vernon to tell his story.

The Emily Dahl Foundation (EDF) has lined-up Chris Lemons as the keynote speaker at The Vernon & District Performing Arts Centre on Nov. 29, 2022.

Last Breath is a 2019 documentary that tells the story of a serious diving accident in 2012, when diver Chris Lemons had his umbilical cable severed and became trapped around 100 metres under the sea without heat or light, and with only the small amount of breathing gas in his backup tank.

“Chris offers an acute, honest, and emotional testimony of what goes through one’s mind when seemingly counting down the minutes to death, and how surprising and revealing one’s response to such a situation can be,” said Sherman Dahl, EDF founder.

Dahl said Lemons, a native of Scotland, speaks internationally, but this will be his only stop in Canada.

“It is as simple as this: My wife, Katie, and I were watching “Last Breath” on Netflix, and I was overwhelmed by the experience that Chris endured. This touched me deeply on another level. Losing my daughter, Emily, in 2019, when she took her own life, was for me, similar to a “Last Breath” experience.”

Dahl said he ended up calling Lemons in Scotland.

“From there, we did zoom calls and instantly became friends. I asked Chris to come to Vernon to speak for The Emily Dahl Foundation, and he said he would love to help the foundation and the Vernon community.”

The foundation is partnering on the event with the North Okanagan Hospice Society, and said tickets will be available this week at www.ticketseller.ca.

Ticket cost $40 with a wine and cheese reception with Chris Lemons after his presentation.
