One of the trucks involved in a triple fatal collision near Golden on Sunday was transporting prized dairy cattle, some of which were 4-H animals destined for the Interior Provincial Exhibition (IPE) in Armstrong.

“The Interior Provincial Exhibition would like to extend heartfelt sympathies to the 4-H youth who lost their animals and to the families of the drivers who tragically lost their lives in a motor vehicle accident on August 28. This is a loss that affects not only our fair but our community. And the 4-H program. The kids raised these animals from newborn calves to yearlings,” Heather King, general manager, said.

The 4-H clubs involved were part of Team B.C. returning from the Western Canadian Classic (WCC) in Brandon, Manitoba which was held Aug. 23 to 27. Eighteen animals were destined for the IPE.

The Township of Spallumcheen also issued a statement to the people affected by the crash, including the truck drivers and their families.

“Our thoughts and condolences are also with the entire Team BC Dairy 4-H members who lost their calves, equipment, and luggage in this awful situation and all the dairy farmers that lost animals. Many of the young 4H members on Team BC reside here locally and would have been gearing up to compete at the Interior Provincial Exhibition and the Salmon Arm Fair,” said Mayor Christine Fraser.

“Community is one of the four pillars of 4-H fundamental beliefs and our local 4-H community is hurting. Our thoughts are with these young members of our community at this time,” Fraser added.

Three Fraser Valley men have been identified as those killed in the crash.
