A dozen local players to take part in Kal Bowl

Players with local ties will hit the gridiron Wednesday for the 2022 Kalamalka Bowl.

The game between the UBC Thunderbirds and Calgary Dinos will feature a dozen players from the area in the exhibition football contest at the Greater Vernon Athletics Park.

The Thunderbirds roster includes tight end Brad Hladik of Vernon; offensive lineman Brandon Sanford of Salmon Arm; receiver Lliam Wishart of Kamloops; and receiver Nicholas Stanfield of West Kelowna.

The Dinos will also see several players with local ties dress for the game, including linebacker Liam Reid of Vernon; defensive lineman Josh Hyer of Vernon; offensive lineman Brayden Szeman of Vernon; receivers Zack Smith and Roan Reid, both of Vernon; defensive back Isaac Athens of Kelowna; fullback Easton Schmuland of Kelowna; and defensive back Nate Beauchemin of Kelowna.

The Kalamalka Bowl, which is sponsored by Kal Tire, will go at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24. As of time of publication, over 1,000 tickets had been sold, and the only available tickets remaining were for standing spectators.

Several events are also planned in the lead up to the big game.

There will be a U14 football camp on Tuesday. Kids will train with university players and coaches. The camp is already fully booked.

Local students in Grades 9 to 12 will also be able to train with university players and coaches in another camp Tuesday, which is also fully booked.

A family fun event entitled Huddle in the Park will be held at Polson Park on Tuesday. The event will allow members of the public to meet the players, and will also feature live music by Cod Gone Wild. The Huddle in the Park will begin at 6 p.m.
