A trip to the grocery store while on vacation in the Okanagan turned out to be a life changing moment for an Alberta residents.

Lana Burrell of Calgary was enjoying a holiday in Lake Country when she stopped at Save-On-Foods to pick up a few groceries and purchased the lottery ticket on a whim.

It wasn’t until she returned home to Calgary that she realized she matched 4/4 Extra numbers, netting her a $500,000 prize.

“I was at home and downloaded BCLC’s Lotto! App,” she explained. “It said I was a winner but I didn’t believe it so I re-checked the numbers on the computer. I was so excited.”

Burrell first shared the news with her husband.

“He didn’t believe me at first and thought I was trying to show him a computer issue when I was actually showing him the winning numbers. Once he realized he had a big grin on his face and we high-fived!”

Burrell has plans to retire in the near future thanks to her prize. She also looks forward to taking some online classes for some further education.

“This win means the possibility of retirement and that is pretty life-changing,” she added.
