Predator Ridge residents seek city support for emergency siren

Predator Ridge is looking to install an emergency alert siren in its community, and has requested support from the City of Vernon.

The Predator Ridge Community Emergency Management Committee (PRCEMC) wants to purchase and install a siren, similar to an air-raid siren, that can be used to warn area residents and visitors in the event that an evacuation order is issued for the area.

PRCEMC coordinator Gordon Wilson told council on Monday (June 13), that they would purchase and install the device, but requested that the city’s Emergency Management Program act as the coordinating agency and have the authority to activate and control the siren in the event of a wildfire-related evacuation order.

“The siren we’re proposing to install at Predator Ridge would be a rotating siren that rotates in a 360 degree radius, and is manufactured by a company called Federal Signal,” Wilson told council.

“We would mount this on a 45-foot-tall utility pole at the existing Predator Ridge Fire Hall, and all costs related to the supply and the installation and maintenance of this siren would be provided by Predator Ridge residents, Wesbild Developments and Sparkling Hill Resort. I would just like to reaffirm that there would be no cost to the city other than the occasional testing of the siren.”

The testing would involve ‘growler’ tests every two or three months that sees the rotor checked out and creates some low volume sound, as well as full test of the siren in the summer months, which would be done only after it was communicated across the region that the siren would be tested.

The siren would only be used if an evacuation order was issued, and would not be activated for an evacuation alert, a house fire, or other incidents.

The range of the siren would be a 6,500 foot radius, which covers the entire Predator Ridge community as well as Sparkling Hill Resort and reaches almost down to Highway 97.

“This [range] is very important to us, as in the event of a sudden evacuation requirement, the siren activation would alert those that would be the farthest away either golfing, biking or hiking,” said Wilson.

“It would alert them to imminent danger and to return to the resort or their home and prepare to evacuate.”

Wilson noted that people participating in these activities may not have access to their phones or digital devices and not be able to receive the orders when issued, and the siren would ensure they are alerted and take action to safely leave the area.

Council accepted the delegation for information with a unanimous vote. Councillors Brian Quiring and Kelly Fehr, as well as Mayor Victor Cumming, were not in attendance at the meeting.

Predator Ridge Resort is a 36-hole golf resort community in the City of Vernon. It covers about 1,200 acres of land and has about 600 residents.

Owner Wesbild Holdings says the community plan approved by the city calls for 2,100 units which could house approximately 5,000 people.
