Jail & Bail supports Cops for Kids

Area residents could be hauled off to a slammer at the Boston Pizza as part of the annual Jail and Bail event for Cops for Kids.

Cops for Kids has partnered with Boston Pizza and the Armstrong Kin Club to host the event.

“On Thursday [April 21] we will be set up at Boston Pizza and we will have off-duty Vernon North Okanagan RCMP members making ‘arrests’ of local citizens who would be otherwise law-abiding citizens,” event coordinator Courtney King told Vernon Matters.

“The jail birds will have the choice of serving their term on ‘house arrest’ at their location, or they will be ‘in custody’ and brought back to Boston Pizza where our judge will be and they’ll serve their jail sentence.”

In order to be released from the slammer, the “inmates” must meet bail.

“Bail is in the form of pledges for Cops for Kids, so we ask the ‘snitch’ or the ‘jailbird’ to give us an idea of what a bail might be appropriate,” said King.

“That being said, poor behaviour can definitely affect the judges decision and he’s been known to add bail onto those who are not cooperating or who are being silly, or are too well connected for their own good.”

King added that the mayor, for example, would have bail set much higher than the average person’s bail because of his notoriety.

All money raised through pledges goes to Cops for Kids, which supports children across South Eastern B.C. facing illness, disability or traumatic crisis in the form of grants.

King told Vernon Matters that they hope to raise around $10,000 for the cause through this year’s event.

People can ‘snitch’ on their friends, family members and colleagues and have them hauled away on a ‘summons’ by emailing info@copsforkids.org or calling 250-801-4438.
