Firearm, ammunition seized and arrest made in Vernon traffic stop

Apr 14, 2022 | 1:28 PM

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP arrested an individual and seized a firearm and ammunition during a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon.

A member of the RCMP’s Crime Reduction Unit was conducting a proactive patrol in Vernon’s Foothills neighbourhood just after 2 p.m. April 13 when he noticed a vehicle with an inactive license plate leaving a residence.

The vehicle was pulled over, and it was discovered that the passenger was wanted on an active arrest warrant for firearms-related offences.

The 38-year-old Vernon man was arrested, and a search of the vehicle resulted in the officer locating and seizing a long-barreled firearm and a quantity of ammunition.

The man, who is known to police, remains in custody and will appear in court at a later date.

It was also discovered that the driver of the vehicle, a 41-year-old woman, was prohibited from driving under both the Criminal Code and B.C. Motor Vehicle Act.

She was issued an appearance notice and released at the scene.

The RCMP’s investigation into this case is ongoing.
