Event to celebrate arena upgrade and help resident needing kidney transplant

An event will be held in Lumby this month to celebrate the community’s upgraded arena, and also to help a resident in need.

Angie Clowry, who was a team leader for Lumby’s succesful Kraft Hockeyville campaign in 2016, has announced plans for the Lumby Barn Dance on April 30 at the Pat Duke Memorial Arena.

Clowry said she had always planned to hold a dance at the arena, affectionately known as The Barn, once the $3-million renovation to the facility was completed, but then the pandemic hit.

“It’s been a long two years with COVID and many are ready to get outside, socialize and get back to some sense of normalcy,” Clowry remarked. “It’s time to invite everyone out to have a look inside the rink with all ages by donation [for a] Lumby Barn Dance, which follows up with a ticketed 19+ dance in the evening.”

The upgrade included four new change rooms, including one for female players, improvements to existing change rooms, a new viewing and warming area and entryway, and reinforcements to the existing structure.

The arena dates back to 1967 and is named after a former mayor of the village.

The official grand reopening of the updated arena was held in December 2020 as documented by the following video from the Regional District of North Okanagan.

Clowry said she also wanted the event to benefit someone or something as well, and that turned out to be “divine timing” with Lumby resident Cole Derry needing a second kidney transplant and currently under going dialysis.

“Following Cole’s kidney transplant in 2020 various challenges saw them heading to Vancouver a number of times for infections and treatments. Now, doctors are saying that a second kidney transplant is needed,” Clowry said. “Cole and [his wife] Karen aren’t asking for help, the community is offering it and we plan to have a great time doing it.”

“We are gathering silent auction items with the hopes of creating a solid fund for Cole and Karen. Auction items can be dropped off at Trail Tire Lumby.”

Clowry is encouraging people to register as an organ donor.

“Grab your health care number and log on to www.taketwominutes.ca to register your consent for organ donation. Please consider becoming a living donor. We each have two kidneys, if we can find a living kidney donor this would be the best outcome for the event, as well as for Cole.”

For those wanting to support financially with an e-transfer or willing to consider live kidney donation, please email kidney4cole@gmail.com.
