Vernon Vipers hand out year-end awards

The Vernon Vipers have put a wrap on their 2021-22 BCHL season by announcing the team’s 13 award winners.

FAN FAVORITE PLAYER AWARD: The winners of this years Fan Favourite Awards having been bringing fans to their feet for the last three seasons. Whether it’s a huge overtime winning goal, taking the time to sign an autograph or simply a big smile to a small fan, these two individuals embody what it
Winners: JoJo Tanaka-Campbell & Cam MacDonald

LEADING SCORER AWARD: This player finished the season leading the Vipers in almost every offensive category. Tied for the team lead in goals and 3rd in assists.
Winner: Luke Buss

RENEE HOLLAND COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD: The last two years haven’t been easy when it’s come to getting out in the community. However, when the opportunities arose, this player was always eager to participate in on and off ice activities.
WINNER: Jack Glen

WAYNE BUCK MEMORIAL AWARD & SCHOLARSHIP: This award honors hard-work and unselfish play and thanks to thanks to Beach Radio, there is also a $1500 to further his education and help with costs.

UNSUNG HERO: A back check, key faceoff win, or blocking a shot. These are things that don’t show up on the score sheet, but they sure don’t go unnoticed. Without a commitment to this side of the game, teams don’t have success.

MOST SPORTSMANLIKE AWARD: This player showed great sportsmanship on and off the ice while putting together a great season in the BCHL. In 47 games played this season, this player amassed just eight minutes in penalties.
Winner: Zack Tonelli

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: It’s never easy to be a rookie in this league. It’s an old league, where most teams have a ton of 19 and 20 year olds. It’s maybe even more difficult for this position…This player came in after a small sample size last year and carried the mail for this team. He finished with a record of 18-15-5 record, a goals against average of 2.74 a .914 save percentage and two shutouts while making 38 starts…not to mention hitting the highlight reel on a number of occasions.

BILL BROWN AWARD FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE: Athletics are clearly an integral part of the BCHL, but without the academic component, the goal of a NCAA scholarship can’t happen. This player learned what it took to be a junior hockey player while continuing a high level of education:
Winner: Tyler Chan

SUN VALLEY SOURCE FOR SPORTS MOST IMPROVED PLAYER: The BCHL is a development league. The goal is to recruit players who you believe can grow into college hockey players. It takes commitment in all facets. This player arrived a year ago with size and skating ability. In the last two seasons he’s been able to harness those natural abilities and has turned into a very strong hockey player:

BLUELINERS AWARD & SCHOLARSHIP: The winner of the Blueliners award and scholarship of $1750 is…

TOP DEFENSEMAN AWARD: This defenceman was a leader for the Vipers all season long. He provided solid defensive play while continuing his stellar work ethic that made him a fan favorite with the Viper faithful.

DUNCAN WRAY MEMORIAL AWARD – Presented to an inspiring player who most exemplifies hard work, sportsmanship and integrity on and off the ice:
Winner: Cam MacDonald

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: This is a very special award. To be most valuable means a number of different things to a number of different people. Here it means, being a good teammate, a great leader, striving for excellence and putting the team first.
