‘Kill to scare’ geese plan seeking contractor

Apr 11, 2022 | 6:00 AM

The City of Vernon is still working on a Kill to Scare program this year to control Canada geese numbers.

The project involves killing the dominant goose in a flock, causing other birds to disperse and leave the area in smaller groups.

The technique requires government approval before it can proceed and is an alternative to a cull of a certain number of the birds which the city has also considered.

A city administrative update in today’s Vernon council agenda says prior to submitting the Kill to Scare permits to the province, a suitable contractor with correct credentials must be listed on the permit application.

“Administration has been working with local contractors who provide this service, however, there have been difficulties with availability,” the report stated. “Should this situation continue, administration will be issuing an expression of interest for the service.”

The cost for a Kill to Scare program was listed at $15,000, as of last year.
