RCMP calling on residents to adopt the ‘9 p.m. routine’

Feb 24, 2022 | 1:45 PM

RCMP in the Okanagan are encouraging residents to get into the ‘9 p.m. Routine.’

The routine is an initiative supported by police forces around the world that encourages residents to make a regular routine of conducting security checks to prevent theft in their homes and vehicles on a nightly basis at 9 p.m.

The program is designed to reduce the opportunities for property crimes where criminals steal things from vehicles or homes.

The 9 p.m. Routine includes the following steps:

  • Remove spare keys, garage door openers, electronics and other valuables from vehicles;
  • Ensure home and vehicle doors and windows are shut and locked;
  • Put away and secure all items around your home;
  • Secure your shed and outbuildings;
  • Turn on exterior lights.

Kelowna RCMP will be posting to social media from Feb. 25 to March 11 using the hashtag #9PMRoutine to encourage residents to adopt the routine as part of their nightly practice.

“Property crime can affect any home in Kelowna,” said Cpl. Tammy Lobb, media relations officer of the Kelowna Regional RCMP. “Protect yourself, your loved ones, and your community against property crime”.

Lobb says there were 11,396 acts of property crime in Kelowna in 2021.
