Vipers goalie nets BCHL star of week

The Vernon Vipers have had great goaltending from both their goalies during their nine-game winning streak, and one of them has been honoured by the BCHL.

Roan Clarke, who shares netminding duties with Ethan David, was named the BCHL’s second star of the week after winning both of his games last week, despite facing 88 shots in just two games. He ended the week with a .955 save percentage and a 1.92 goals-against average.

On Wednesday, the 18-year-old from Cloverdale, B.C. was the first star of the game in the Vipers 3-2 road win against the Trail Smoke Eaters. Clarke stopped 49 of 51 shots, which was the most rubber he has faced in his BCHL career. On Friday, he was back in the crease in Cranbrook to take on the Bucks where he impressed once again, this time stopping 35 of the 36 shots he faced through regulation and overtime, then stopped another three in the shootout as the Vipers won 2-1.

Clarke is on a personal seven-game win streak dating back to Jan. 14, while the team is riding a nine-game streak. His record has improved to 11-10-4 in 25 appearances to go along with a .909 save percentage and a 2.85 goals-against average.

The Vipers look for their 10th straight win Wednesday in Penticton against the Vees.

Here are the other weekly stars in the BCHL:

1st Star – Josh Nadeau (F) – Penticton Vees

Nadeau led all BCHL players with four goals last week and tied for the lead in points with six in three games.

On Wednesday night, in a marquee matchup against the first-place Salmon Arm Silverbacks, the New Brunswick native scored the first goal of the game 48 seconds into the third period in his team’s eventual 2-1 road victory. On Friday, the Vees were in Merritt for a date with the Centennials and Nadeau collected an assist in the Vees 5-3 win. On Saturday, the 18-year-old registered his first career BCHL hat trick and also chipped in with an assist for a four-point night in Penticton’s 8-2 win over the Trail Smoke Eaters. He was named first star of the game.

Since the new year, Nadeau has racked up 14 points in 10 games and sits in a tie for sixth in league scoring with 50 points in 36 games. His 28 goals on the year are the third most in the BCHL.

3rd Star – Owen Say (G) – Salmon Arm Silverbacks

Say stopped 77 of the 80 shots he faced last week in two games, going 1-1-0 and finishing the week with a .963 save percentage and a 1.51 goals-against average.

Despite being peppered with 41 shots in a midweek matchup against the Penticton Vees, the 20-year-old kept it a low-scoring game by making 39 save in a 2-1 Salmon Arm loss. He was named the game’s first star. After a night off on Friday, Say was back in net on Saturday for a game against the West Kelowna Warriors. He stopped 38 of 39 shots to keep the game tied through regulation before the ‘Backs won it 16 seconds into overtime.

Say boasts a .924 save percentage this year, which is second best in the BCHL and his 2.32 goals-against average is fourth best in the league. He has also played the third most minutes of any goaltender.
